Senior Thesis Exhibition - Institute of Contemporary Art

CreateTools is a collection of abstracted and deconstructed collages that re-examine my relationship with the tools I use as a graphic designer, including technology, analog objects, and miscellaneous items. This project shifts the focus from the final composition to the tools themselves, exploring their form and function as the primary subject of the work. By blending digital collage, typographic experimentation, and texture, I aim to blur the distinction between tools and art, showcasing their integral role in the creative process. The project also includes a fictionalized space that enhances the immersive experience of viewing the tools as both functional objects and art.

Objectives

  • Reconsider the Role of Tools: Shift the focus of the creative process from the final composition to the tools used, making them the central subject of the work.

  • Explore Deconstruction and Abstraction: Create collages that deconstruct and abstract everyday tools, highlighting their form and function through a new artistic lens.

  • Integrate Digital and Analog Methods: Combine digital collage, typographic experimentation, and texture to explore the relationship between technology and analog objects.

  • Develop a Cohesive Visual Narrative: Use the tools’ general definitions and my personal artistic voice to build a narrative that redefines their role in applied arts.

  • Create an Immersive Experience: Design a fictionalized space that complements the printed collages, creating an intimate experience that showcases each tool as both functional and artisitic.
